Reason for Expansion
Datacite wanted to support across different timezones and have local acknowledgments in different regions.
The Challenge:
DataCite has been fully remote business since its inception, following a successful project in Germany in 2009. While they maintain a physical office there, just one team member is based on-site. The rest work entirely remotely, primarily from home or coworking spaces.
Datacite have a small, distributed team of direct staff. Their team is spread across the UK Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and the U.S. They have a very well-defined governance structure of 78 individuals that are present in different groups around the globe. This includes different focus groups and different expert groups in various regions that work on different aspects of the organization.
As of 2024, Datacite has approximately 27 to 28 staff members which operate across 12 countries. As a non-profit operating across multiple regions, the business required a compliant way to engage distributed employees and contractors without establishing local entities or navigating the complexities of employment law in each country.
So Why North America?
As they continued to expand globally, they tried to operate on a lean basis. Their membership continued to grow, and with this increase in demand, they needed better support across different time zones and local knowledge in different regions. They also looked at bringing onboard new core team members in the different regions as they wanted to expand into the US.
