What to Consider When Hiring Employees in the Netherlands?
Employment
Payroll in the Netherlands is carried out on a monthly cycle. Overtime can be agreed as part of an employment contact however it is worth noting that an employee can only work a maximum of 12 hours per day or 60 hours per week (inclusive of overtime).
An important aspect of employment in the Netherlands to note is that contractors are entitled to the same primary and secondary employment conditions as permanent employees, including an adequate pension scheme.
Benefits
In the Netherlands, employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 days of holidays per year. There is also an 8.33% holiday allowance that is paid out in the month it is earned. Statutory sick leave in the Netherlands is payable.
If an employee becomes ill, in many cases employers are obliged to continue paying their salary for up to two years. Employers must contribute to health insurance under the Health Insurance Act (Zorgverzekeringswet), which requires all residents to have health insurance, and employers have specific responsibilities in this system.
Tax
In the Netherlands, there is something called the 30% ruling.
This is a tax exemption for employees who were hired abroad to work in the Netherlands. If certain conditions are met, employers are allowed to pay contractors 30% of their salary as a tax-free allowance.
